Online Marketing: Let's learn from history and spread our profession

This article arises from a fusion between this Copyblogger article: Alexander Graham Bell and an issue that has been around in my head for some time ... the lack of knowledge of the general public about our profession.

Something very similar happens with Alexander Graham Bell in our environment, although the invention of the telephone is attributed to Bell, it was actually invented in parallel by Elisha Gray and even several years before by Innocenzo Manzetti.

What makes Bell the inventor of the telephone?

He did not invent it first nor was it his original idea ... he went and convinced people that they needed a phone, he went and let everyone know that there was a new invention that had to be paid attention to because it was the future and it had thousands of possible uses.

What does this have to do with Online Marketing?

Speaking with many people from different sectors of Online Marketing in Latin America I realized that we are all basically in the same situation ... when it comes to dealing with a client, we see that he has no idea what we are going to do with the money he is going to invest and we must give long explanations of how the service we offer works.

If every time they ask you how your work works you have to give long explanations ... something is not right!

Let's learn from history, the telephone did not become popular with folded arms, although in recent years there was an "awakening" by many companies there is still no reason to put your hands in your pockets.

There are still a lot of entrepreneurs and companies that do not dare to invest properly in the online sector due to ignorance of how it works ... I think that we should seriously see ways in which we can contribute to popularize our profession, it can even be very lucrative in the short, medium and long term!

It may sound like something very difficult, but every grain of sand counts.

While there may be thousands of people with more knowledge, skill or talent than us… let's learn from Bell! He was not the one with the original idea, nor did he have a unique gift (several people invented the telephone at the same time), but he was the one who put the batteries to share the invention with the world.

Not being the best, not being unique and not being a "genius" are not excuses to sit idly by waiting for the world to change on its own.

I am already preparing my two cents that hopefully will be seen in the second semester of this year, let's not make the mistake of believing that by keeping things for ourselves we are avoiding competition ... maybe we are losing audience and customers!

We always share our information with each other and there are many good initiatives like SEOCanthine that help us share our knowledge with people in the industry… but I think it is time to carry our "message" to entrepreneurs and potential future clients more strongly.

Alexander Graham Bell did not have any mass media or tool to publicize the telephone and yet today we all have one

We have tools and we know how to use them, what better way to show that they really work by using them to publicize our profession in a massive way?
