The Internet is changing all the time?
Today I read a great article from Perry marshall about how many times we lose sight of the fundamentals for each novelty that appears along the way, so I asked for permission to translate it and post it here and to my surprise granted it to me!
It's a bit long, but here it goes:
I just got a call from a guy who said, "It's VERY hard to keep up with the internet, there are new things happening every day."
This is true ... but it really is a HALF true.
If you're paying attention, this 2-minute article can save you a year of frustration.
If you completely believe that everything is changing all the time and that you MUST follow that, you will be in a perpetual state of overwhelm and hardly ever get anything done. Every time someone says "jump", you are going to jump. You're going to always think that the last cool brilliant goal is the Answer to Everything.
The symptom is, 2 months after the launch of each product, you are 2 months further from having a business that really works.
Here is the real truth:
The 90% of what is "new and different" is completely irrelevant. A waste of your precious time.
Only the 10% of that is going to make a difference for you.
The thing is: From the point of view of actually selling something to someone, there have only been a dozen major developments in Online Marketing since the late 90s.
- Autoresponders
- Online Auctions
- Shopping Carts
- Paypal
- Pay per Click
- Contextual advertising on the content network
- Audio and Video Streaming
- Social Networking, example: Twitter and Facebook
- Software for Blogs
- Live chat
- Crowdsourcing
In other words, there is roughly one major development per year, not 100!
Of course, within these great advances there are other smaller ones. But my motto is "There is nothing new under the sun", it is not some kind of cynical statement, it is a massive time saver.
You may have noticed, I rarely jump up and down and tell you that something urgently needs your attention NOW. That's because success comes from mastering the grassroots, not from spreading panic.
When I tell you that something is important, it is because it is really worth your time so that you sit down and pay attention.
I see the world like this: The surface is always changing, but the really important things remain the same. When you master the principles, you learn to quickly apply them when something new arises.
In other words:
When you immediately recognize which part of the "New Glowing Mirror" is NOT new, that's when you have the ability to profit from it.
When Google Adwords was completely new, I immediately understood that it was like the "Scientific Advertising" of 1918 all over again, only 10,000 times faster. I knew the money was going to come from using it scientifically and entering the conversation inside the person's head.
When Facebook advertising was new, I immediately knew that it was like magazine advertising for Black Ribbons. If you know someone is a black belt, there is a whole list of things they are going to buy that seem to have nothing to do with martial arts. That is Right Angle Marketing, what was old is new again.
I can absolutely promise you that innovations that are currently unimaginable will appear in the following years. Trillion dollar empires will appear out of nowhere.
When they do, massive mobs of people will be yelling at you, rushing you to jump into the wagon. But you're going to find that exaggerators don't know how to use what's new because they never understood what worked before.
The "hype" of Social Media is disappearing now, which is exactly when the real business people who make money from it turn up.
One of our "rats" from the Facebook advertising lab was Bill, who wishes to remain anonymous, we guided him as he created his Facebook campaigns.
In the last 2 months he invested $12000 in Facebook and made $48000 profit.
Quietly, without any exaggeration or fanaticism.
Simply applying the bases and adapting the old to the new.
I invite you to consider that when you learn from the masters, when you practice your art as a master… then instead of being the frenzied red ribbon, you can be the serene, extremely confident, unflappable fourth level black ribbon.
You can be the champion who calmly and quietly stands on the mat and demolishes his opponent with three lightning-fast strikes without breaking a sweat.
Master the basics. Become a black belt. Find the old in the new and discover how to function on a whole new level of serenity and confidence.
