How Facebook determines which ads are of interest to you

Facebook determines which ads will be of interest to us based on different criteria, including:

  • Information from our profile (Age, gender, geographical location, etc.)
  • Pages we like
  • Devices we use to connect
  • Shared content
  • Activity on websites and applications

Surely hundreds of different factors are taken into account when determining which ad is the most suitable for a user.

This is because showing ads that are really of interest is the only way to keep both users and advertisers compliant, otherwise users will simply install an ad blocker in the short / medium term and advertisers will stop investing in advertising.

Facebook lets us know what ad preferences you think may be of interest to us and edit them to see only those ads that are relevant to us. In this way Facebook can optimize its algorithm and we can see better ads.

To do this, we just have to follow the link: https://www.facebook.com/ads/preferences/edit

It is fun to see the hits and misses, for example, the category "Business and industry" is quite successful because of the exception of the interest "Gymnasiums".

Even though I haven't been in a gym in years, things get more bizarre when I broaden my interest by clicking and I find that according to Facebook I'm interested in "Zumba" and "Bodybuilding".

In general terms, the profile that Facebook managed to put together about my interests is quite precise, except for some exceptions that may arise in some categories of interest.

In your case, how accurate is the interest profile? 🙂
